Never Again.

Yesterday, I had 3 of my wisdom teeth removed.

Since a friend is about to have dental work done, I won't go into details, because I don't want her to feel anxious.

I was very unimpressed with the surgeon we used, and while I'm sure she didn't mean to hurt me, her manner left quite a bit to be desired.

Fortunately she prescribed nice drugs that were strong enough that I'm not in any pain (at the moment) NOW... but I am not gong back to have the 4th tooth removed unless it starts causing problems.

Now I just have my cleaning appointment on Jan 7th, and I should be done with dentist expenses for a while ($300 so far. ouch.)

It wasn't so bad when I had it done. You'll be fine. I thought that it would be worse than it turned out to be.

Try stocking up on Slim-Fast shakes or other similar cold thick things. They do help. Really. What did you get prescribed? I've got some Tylenol3 (the codeine sort) sitting around from something similar evilbenfranklin had done last year -- he broke a tooth on a nut in the topping of a Drumstick cone.

They gave me Tylenol 3 for the original problem- an infected wisdom tooth. It wasn't really doing much for me, so after the surgery, they gave me Hydrocodone, which is working very nicely.

And yeah, I'm okay- But I don't want to EVER have to go through that again. I am evidently quite resistant to anesthesia, so I felt most of what they were doing, and when they removed the infected tooth, I couldn't breath because I was crying so hard.

My mother's dentist told her once that he didn't want to have to remove any of her teeth because the roots were so well bonded to the bone of her jaw. I suspect that the surgeon ran into the same thing with me. It was not fun.

Didn't they give you a general? I was worried that I'd have to deal with something traumatic when I had mine done, but I just ended up sleeping through it all -- either that or they did what they did when I got a colonoscopy -- you're awake so you can react to requests to move around, etc, but you lose all the memories of what goes on when it's overwith. (That test was negative, they attributed those problems to stress.)

To this day, though, I can't find something I misplaced later that evening. I remember most of the day after the medication wore off, but apparently occasional memory lapses within the next 24 hours are normal.

Either that or I'm going nuts. Hey, I like that explanation.

They gave me an injection in my jaw (of novocaine or something similar) and they had me inhaling nitrous gas. I was totally awake and felt (and remember) everything they did. I thought the woman was going to wrench my jaw apart at a couple of moments. If I ever have to have serious dental work done again, I will have them knock me out totally.

Dude, $300 for 3 teeth is actually quite a good price. You obviously have insurance. ;-)

I'm sending the applesauce and pudding trucks over right about now. I'd start gathering whatever kinds of large containers you have... it's gonna be a tasty-but-mushy week or two. :)
