Con Report

First off, the owner of the medic alert necklace has contacted me, so that worry is gone. It'll be put in the mail to him tomorrow. :)

MFF is the first convention of any type that I have ever attended, and I want to thank Aureth and all the staff for the hard work they did, and for letting me help out.

There were some sticky parts during the convention. Stress levels rose, tempers got short... but.. looking back.. I'm really sorry that it's over, and I'm REALLY looking forward to next year.

Some things I didn't care for...
  • Having to kick friends out of our room at night so we could sleep. I felt like a major bitch for doing so, and I want to apologize to everyone. In a discussion with Roho, we decided that the problem was that we were all coming back to the room really late, and that there was no real time to socialize before sleeping. Will work harder on getting back to our room for booze and socialization earlier next year. :)
  • Feeling useless. Hopefully next year, I can find more things for myself to do. This year I kind of rattled around, and while people told me that I was an immense help, I still felt like I couldn't really contribute very much. Of course, next year, I'll have a better idea of how things are run, so hopefully, I can do more.
  • Watching friends get stressed out beyond human endurance. Quite a few of my close friends were staff (Hell,

<li>Watching friends get stressed out beyond human endurance. Quite a few of my close friends were staff (Hell, <ljuser="Aureth"> was con CHAIR), and I felt so badly seeing them having to bear up under a lot of strain. Tempers got short (including my own), and I just... wished there was something I could do to help ease that. Sunday night helped, I think... and I really enjoyed that.
<li>Overhearing complaints about the convention. If you don't like the con, don't go. End of story. Aureth worked his ass off before and during, and he has a very demanding job. He did great. Anyone that says otherwise is a very petty, small minded person.
<li>Not selling any art. That's right folks. I didn't sell squat. As far as I know, only one person at the con met their quota for sales, and that was Sofawolf. According to all reports, we had about the same amount of art in the art show, but the auctions (charity and art) were dead. And if Kage can't get people to bid, folks... it can't be done. Considering that attendance to the con was up 30%, and given the current political climate, I don't really like hearing insinuations that people's sales disappointments were somehow the fault of the convention. I was, admittedly, a bit angry when I saw that some were blaming the charity auction for their lack of sales. I find it reprehensible that ESPECIALLY at this time of year that people begrudge a very worthwhile charity money. I'm just as broke as the rest of you, and yeah, I lost a LOT of money in time off from work, the costs of prints and mattings, my share of the hotel bill, and feeding myself during the con. So stay home next time if you can't handle a bit of disappointment.

Highlights of the con... Meeting Poe, Syndra, <lj user="katneko"> and <lj user="frysco">, for starters. Meeting <lj user="2_gryphon"> was fun, but I didn't spend a whole lot of time talking to him. Getting to see <lj user="chebutykin"> again was a real treat as well, and we're all making plans to go up and see her next year.

I had the opportunity to work closely with <lj user="roho"> in helping our charity representatives, which was.. amazingly fun. I suspect that those that begrudged the charity money didn't have a chance to sit and talk with Vicky and Kim, otherwise they might have had a different opinion. I've always admired those that run rescue centers for animals, and I was very surprised when they indicated that I'd be welcome as a volunteer.

The charity auction received more donations than I was expecting- I didn't realize that a lot of people would wait until they arrived at the con to give their donations, rather than mailing them in, although that makes sense. Our big items were a huge cheetah banner that..um.. fell.. from a post at the Lincoln Park zoo (that I so desperately wanted)- it sold for $350? I think? The tiger blanket I brought in sold for $180, and quite a few other items sold for nice high bids. All told, we raised $3000 for AFA, which was wonderful.

The art auction didn't do as well, I was told- I was stuck in the artshow doing receipts for those that did make purchases. I saw a few gorgeous pieces that I really wanted, but couldn't afford. Ahh well. I think I'll definately be bringing more money next year. ;)

I had some really good ideas for next year that might make things run a little more smoothly (They might not, but it's worth a try), and in a month or so, I'll start looking into getting for next year. I've had a few ideas for artwork that might sell, and there are a few things that, since I have a bit of money left over, I want to commission. Like some of <lj user="Jenwolf">'s gorgeous magnets. :)

All in all... I had a really good time. Sunday night, we all gathered in our room, got rather drunk, and unwound. It was good to see people destressing. :)

I'd like to do more to help next year... even though I said otherwise Sunday night. But we'll see what happens.
