candle flame

9 years ago, I was reeling from an unexpected divorce (but starting to get better, he left in Jan 2000), I hated my job, I hated Dallas, I wanted a change. I picked up and moved to Traverse City, Michigan to live with friends and... well.. it didn't work out. But I'm glad that I did it.

While I was there, I bumped into an online acquaintance I had met some years before. We chatted for a while and the acquaintance began blossoming into a friendship. In September 2001, he was going through a nasty breakup, and I ached to see him go through so much pain. By the end of October, we began to realize we had stronger feelings than friendship. Time passed and we spent hours on the phone and online, talking, hoping, thinking about what might possibly happen between us, as we had never met in person.

December 4, 2001, I left Traverse City, intending to visit Chicago and see this man that had so captured my imagination. I still remember the knots in my stomach, the fear that what we had online wouldn't translate to an actual relationship; because I already knew I loved him.

He opened the door to his building, and I felt like lightning had struck. He was laughing (he was nervous too), and he had the most beautiful smile. He still has that beautiful smile, and he still makes me feel electric shocks when he turns it on me.

I moved to Chicago in February, 2002. September 2006, we stood before our family, friends and God and pledged our love would last forever. I make the joke that I kissed a lot of frogs before I found my prince, but find him I did, and I don't intend to let him go.

Happy Valentine's Day, my roho. I love you.
