In my quest for spirituality, it's occured to me that I have lots of friends from every walk of life.

So. I ask. What book do you recommend as particularly life changing/spiritual? What has influenced your life?

For me, it was the Book of Mormon. I've read it 4 times, and it's probably my favorite book of scripture. I don't necessarily agree with the Mormon faith, but I believe that the Book is as true an accounting as the New or Old Testament.

What do you read?

The Taoist "Way of Virtue", it's what brought me to the faith in the beginning and what keeps me here years later. :)

I enjoy the book of Ecclesiastes(from the Old Testament) very much.

"What profit is there to the worker from that in which he toils? I have seen the work which God has given the sons of men with which to occupy themselves." - Ecc. 9:10, although I'm not sure of the reference or exact wording.

These two books,"Dropping ashes on the Buddha" The Teaching of Zen Master Seung Sahn and "Comfortable With Uncertainty" by Pema Chodron both have had a profound impact on the way I perceive the world around me. They also have inspired me to be more selfless, more kind, and have challenged me to be introspective.

I see plenty of people are going to cover the East... so I won't.

Instead, I offer Calvin Miller's The Singer, a retelling of the story of Jesus that made me cry and gave me nightmares. It's a trilogy, but I only ever found the first two books. I note, though, that they're selling them on Amazon as an omnibus. Hmm. Might have to buy that.

How can you stop reading a book that begins, "For most who live, hell is never knowing who they are. The Singer knew, and knowing was his torment." ...? (I can't. I just clicked on the 'Search inside' function on Amazon, read the first page, and now I'm reading the entire excerpt. *sigh* :)
