Allrighty. So I finally broke down and bought a set of watercolors. Problem is, I have NO clue whatsoever how to use them. I bought a block of 140lb cold pressed watercolor paper. Do I still need a board to stretch the paper on? And I spritz my paper with water BEFORE painting? Do I just use the paint out of the tube, or do I need to dilute it with water? :)

I'm hoping some of you watercolor gurus out there can help. :>

Yes, you will need to stretch the paper, though it might not be as much as an issue with 140 lb paper.

Yes, you typically do thin the paint with water, by quite a bit. With your particular paints, you will want to experiment with how they thin. However, I am a gonzo painter, and I like using the stuff straight from the tube. So, really, it's a matter of taste.

Random nifty thing: If you thin the paint a lot, you can make a lot of really nifty texture effects by throwing salt on the painting before it dries.

As far as I know: you should stretch and tape the paper onto board so it won't warp too much, but it will always warp, so get used to it. I don't know about adding water to the paper before painting; that sounds like a good way to have it start bleeding everywhere right away. But you should definitely dilute the paint with some water, what ratio depends on how opaque you want it to be.

I'm more of an acrylics person. You don't necessarily have to thin down acrylics, you can use them at maximum opaquity, but they flow a lot better off the brush if you do thin them just a bit.

I dabbled a bit with the paper still on the block, and was... really not happy with the results. I did spritz the paper down though. I also found that the brushes that came with the paints suck- The first time I used them, and the bristles were already coming loose and sticking in the paint. I want to get some new ones, and some frisket, then I'll try again. :)
