I've never gone wrong with an O'Reilly book, myself.

I'd tend to agree with you, but I thought that the O'Reilly Book "MySQL and mSQL" was an utter piece of crap. It was poorly written and discussed things that weren't even related to databases. (It's been awhile, but I think it actually started talking about CGIs, WTF?)

As for books to recommend, I don't have much I can suggest. I learned PHP and MySQL mostly from the online documentation. If you want to learn SQL, you might be better off just looking for a book on SQL that is platform-agnostic, since MySQL does do some things differently from the SQL standard.
